Janet Pedersen has over 15 years of teaching experience, both young and adult. As an instructor, she has taught students on location and in workshops, as well as on-line. She has over 7 years of experience teaching online university students in foundational drawing as well as figure drawing, and has guided students to develop portfolios for entrance to top level Universities. Janet works in most mediums and paints in a bold, contemporary style. Her use of color and loose brushwork lend an abstract quality to her mostly figurative and landscape paintings.

This workshop will begin plein-air, and end in the studio. Prerecorded footage will show my easel and acrylic paint set-up on location. I will show you what I’m looking for in a composition and how I address my subject. Working boldly, my aim is to capture an impression of what initially attracted me to my subject—usually it is about the light. Working in fast- drying acrylic means I can block in my composition, and alter the color and large shapes freely before addressing the more detailed ones. Later, in the studio I can always find room for improvement; does my painting need more detail? Less? Asking myself these questions and more, and listening to what my painting needs is part of this ongoing dialogue. Locations will include my neighborhood in Brooklyn. Come join me!

Still-Life Painting Workshop

Paint the still-life using acrylic paint!

Working directly from arranged objects, we will explore how to compose your own compelling still life by:

recognizing and translating ‘values’
simplifying detail and shapes
color mixing with a limited palette
applying paint to achieve desired affects

I will do a quick demo at the beginning of each session.

This class is designed for those who may have painted on location before but want help honing your skills. Classes include demo and individual attention for those choosing the small group option. Students must bring their own easel and art supplies. Supply list provided upon registration. The cost is $200 for private instruction for 2.5 hours. For small groups, $150 per person, minimum of 2, max 4 people, for a 2.5 hour class. Please form your own small groups and contact me when ready.
